Despite the rain and cold temperature, the Special Olympics 1K and 5K
Fundraising Run/Walk kicked off on Saturday, January 26th, at Mike
Long Track. This year's event raised a lot of money to help local
athletes train and compete.

The Special Olympics is an organization committed to empowering
children and adults with intellectual disabilities to become physically
fit, productive, and respected members of society through sport
training and competition. Several Florida State student-athletes took
part in this year's fundraiser to contribute to the success of this
program and provide support to those who participated. The
enthusiastic Seminoles helping in this weekends' race represented a
number of teams including: Cross Country, Volleyball, Women's
Swimming & Diving, and Men's & Women's Golf.

Athletes ran along side participants and encouraged them around the
course through the finish line while others took part in the awards
ceremony following both races. The children and adults with
intellectual disabilities who participate in Special Olympics develop
greater self-confidence, show enthusiasm as well as courage, and
gain memorable experiences. This year, they gave Florida State's
student-athletes their own memorable experiences.
