Smiling moms with carnations pinned to their clothes dined on pancakes
during a Saturday fundraiser for Special Olympics of Leon County.
Peter Henry came to the breakfast at Applebee's on Capital Circle Northwest
with his wife, Shirley Henry, and 24-year-old son, Jonathan Henry, a Special
Olympics athlete who has won 24 gold medals in state competition.
"I came to support Special Olympics, of course," he said. "Plus, I'm hungry,
and because I'm always on a diet, I don't get pancakes at home. And also
because it's Mother's Day."
Shirley Henry teased him: "Don't forget that."
Terry Massa, assistant county coordinator for the organization, said it was
third year they've held the fundraiser. Last year, the group raised $2,000.
This year, they hoped to raise $3,000.

Besides a breakfast of pancakes, eggs and bacon, the event also included a
car wash and door prizes. All mothers were entered for a drawing to win a
$50 gift certificate to Applebee's.
The restaurant's staff prepared the food in the kitchen and Special Olympics
volunteers served as waiters.

"It's a good way for the students to be involved in serving in a restaurant," said Gretchen Everhart School Principal
