Giving back and paying back will be the agenda for the 12 Tallahassee-area high school golfers teaming up in the 2008
Pandhandle Cup.
The two-day competition tees off today at the Panama Country Club.
The competition puts eight boys and four girls from the eastern part of the Panhandle (from Panama City to Madison)
against the boys and girls from the Western Panhandle (from Panama City to the Alabama state line).
Last year, the West team came to Killearn Country Club and dominated the locals 22-2 in the Ryder Cup format contest.
Other than giving the top area high school golfers recognition for their performance this past season, the event also
brings together the high school golfers for a dinner with Special Olympic golfers.
"Some of these players help coach the Special Olympics golfers," Cup media liaison Steve Rogers said. "Those kids
look up to the high school players because of what they can do."
The entire function is a fundraiser for Special Olympics Leon County.
Selected by a team coordinator and committee, the players are asked to donate $100 to the effort.
Event organizers hope the high school golfers gain a greater understanding about the importance of giving back to the
community.
The East team will be represented by the following players (school affiliations are in parenthesis): Branden Collins
(Leon), Stone Cowie (Wakulla), Dustin Dye (Leon), Elleni Gavalas (Leon), Warren Hess (Wakulla), Haley Hill (North Florida
Christian), Callie Kitchens (North Florida Christian), Carlton Kuhlo (Chiles), Chris Rogers (Chiles), Preston Rogers
(Chiles), Scott Sheppard (Chiles), Robbie Van Riper (Florida High).
